A Perfect Internship!

Right now I am in my second internship of the gap year, at APB Cook Studio in Mumbai (the first stint was a month in the Food & Nutrition department of MAIS, my high school in Bangalore; more on that later…).

APB, short for A Perfect Bite, is one of India’s first cooking studios. It is a beautiful, shiny, professional-looking kitchen with all the fancy equipment, the big ovens, a fully stocked pantry… the type you see on Masterchef with dreamy, longing eyes! Such an exciting place to work at!

The Studio is owned and run by Rushina Munshaw-Ghildiyal. As a professional, Rushina is one of India’s pioneering food writers and an expert on several aspects of food. As a person, she is unimaginably warm and welcoming, and immediately makes you feel at ease. She took me under her wing, no questions asked. (As an aside, she often has a mischievous glint in her eye, and is quite capable of leg-pulling!)

The main aim of the APB Cook Studio is to teach and inspire people to cook and to experiment in the kitchen. It also hosts several types of events like cookbook launches and private cooking contests, and undertakes a wide range of food-related consultancy projects.

My work here involves getting a taste of all these activities; so far I’ve worked on recipe development for a food production company, seen food styling and photography for a magazine article, and done a lot of research on diverse cuisines, cooking methods and origins of different types of foods. I’ve also gotten to write newsletters, articles, blog posts and tweets as part of various client assignments.

It’s been about 2 months into this internship, and so far it’s been an absolute blast!
