Taking SWĀD Back to School

Went to Bethany High School & Junior College last week, with 3 of my SWĀD teammates, to talk to the students of grades 11 and 12 about the Slow Food philosophy and SWĀD's initiatives.

Introducing the students to the Slow Food philosophy

Going in, I was a bit nervous, and unsure of the impact our presentation would have. But the students we spoke to were extremely smart, and quickly got involved with the subject, and we ended up having a very lively discussion. We exchanged thoughts on whether we are responsible for our food choices, and why it is important to connect with and take charge of the food we eat. They enthusiastically contributed opinions and new insights to our discussion, and a few students even stayed back to ask us more questions, which was extremely heartening!

This is just a small beginning in our effort to contribute towards food education in schools. The hope is that with several major initiatives like Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, the Edible Schoolyard, NESFAS School Gardens, and others putting their might behind such a movement, it won't be long before food education becomes an integral part of school curriculums around the world.
